Assam Tense After Tinsukia Killings & 12-Hour State Bandh Today

GUWAHATI: The statewide bandh called by various organisations on Saturday in protest against the killings of five Bengali-speaking people by unidentified armed gang of miscreants at Dhola in Tinsukia district of Assam.

However, the ULFA has refuted all allegations of its involvement in the killing. The Assam government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and a job for the next of the kin of the deceased.

There was no impact of bandh in eastern Assam districts including Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat where life continued normal way during the bandh hours.

Life went on quite normal in Guwahati city where  city buses and other vehicles could be seen plying freely. Cab services like Ola, Uber etc., were too plying  normally on the city roads.

Most of the business establishments like shops and markets remained open, Government offices, schools and other educational institutions are functioning as usual.

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday condemned the brutal killing of five people in Assam, saying that “such cowardly acts will not be tolerated”.

Political parties and organisations across the state have condemned the killings and demanded that the culprits be immediately nabbed.

Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal condemned “the killing of innocent people” and conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved families. The CM appealed to the people of Assam to maintain peace and harmony.

In West Bengal, the Congress leadership on Friday announced that the party will observe “Black Day” across the state on November 3 and urged the Centre to dismiss the BJP-run Assam government.
