Ayodhya Case Hearing Adjourned Till January 29, Justice Lalit Recuses Himself From Hearing Ayodhya Case

NEW DELHI: The Ayodhya case hearing was adjourned today after Judge UU Lalit leaves the hearing saying he was a lawyer in a related case earlier.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi had said the court would only fix the schedule to hear a batch of petitions related to the matter and clarified that the hearing was not starting on Thursday.A newly constituted bench will now hear the case on January 29.

Justice Lalit was a part of the five-judge bench that was set up earlier this week by the CJI to hear a batch of petitions contesting the 2010 verdict of Allahabad High Court in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case.

Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana and Justice DY Chandrchud are the three other judges on the bench which is headed CHI Ranjan Gogoi.

The registry of the Supreme Court has also been told to physically examine that all translations of records — from Persian, Hindi and other languages — are there on the day of the hearing.

The Supreme Court had, on October 29 last year, fixed the matter in the first week of January before the “appropriate bench”.

Modi-led NDA government is under a lot of pressure from right-wing organisations like the Visva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and the RSS who have been demanding an ordinance to pave the way for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

The Ram Mandir issue right from 1853 when a group of Hindus belonging to the Nirmohi Akhara occupied the Badbri Masjid and claimed its ownership, the Ram Mandir movement has been at the centre of the country’s politics.
