KOLKATA: In the last 2 articles, we started to understand how to convert the desires into S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals. We discussed first 4 limbs i.e. S.M.A.R. Today, we will understand what the remaining limbs i.e. T.E.R. stand for.

Convert the desires into S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals (cont…)

After understanding the first 4 factors i.e. ‘S’ for ‘Specific & Simple’; ‘M’ for ‘Measurable’, ‘A’ for ‘Adjustable & Attainable’ & ‘R’ for ‘Realistic’, now we will fine tune our desires on the remaining parameters i.e. T.E.R.

Time-bound

Always set deadlines for important goals and do your best to honour the self-imposed deadlines. If there is no deadline, there is no sense of urgency and slackness starts prevailing. You will find that deadlines will force you to channelize your focused energy towards working harder & more effectively towards achieving your goals, as the deadline approaches. However, reasonable time should be allowed to be taken to achieve the goals. While considering optimum time, one should be cautious to see that he should not loose motivation or focus. Setting a target time for achieving your goal will give you a clear frame of mind to focus on working towards your clear target. However, if in any case, you could not honour any deadline, don’t get de-motivated or disheartened. It should not derail your overall goal achieving programme.

Enjoyable and Exciting

Remember, you are setting the goals in different walks of life to make your life better, which means that you want to increase your enjoyment level. You should set such types of goals, which are enjoyable to achieve and have some excitement for you also. For example, my goal is to conduct workshops globally; by the time, I touch 60 years of age, which happened to be the normal age of superannuation, had I continued my Government job. Another desire of mine is to work upon the mindset of present & future generations through my dream project ‘Read, Learn & Earn Movement’ which is a mission to create a global learning hub in networking mode for the first time in the world so that the youth & women both are empowered. Both are exciting and enjoyable as I will travel across the globe in the process, that too, without spending a penny from my own pocket.

Rewarding & Reviewable

You should also check your progress at regular intervals. Set a reward programme for you and your family members on achievement of short term or intermediate term goals, so as to maintain enthusiasm. Always keep on reviewing the goals. If you have achieved the goal too easily, make the next goal some harder. If your goal has taken too much time or effort to achieve, make the next goal some easier. If there is any major change in circumstances, you may change your goals. The point is that you should always keep on reviewing your goals as to whether the same are still relevant on a particular point of time or some of them have become redundant or need modification. If somebody is 25 years old and is plans to start career and family, he will visualise a picture of life. But after 10 years, at the age of 35, he will have to evaluate where he is in life. He might be more or less successful than imagined. He might be having more or less children in his family than planned. He has to take the stock of the situation and then re-plan for the next 5 or 10 years.

(In the next article, we will know about some crucial modifications required to be made in our S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
