Happy G.O.P.T.A. Year, 2019

By: Dr. Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Sr. Associate Editor-ICN Group

Surprised, why I am wishing Happy G.O.P.T.A. Year in place of Happy New Year!

The answer is here.

KOLKATA: Since childhood, we have seen that new year’s resolutions gradually evaporate by 15th January or so, when the initial hype of new year gradually fades. We have seen that the new year resolutions are simply wishes, stored in the back of our mind, which we wish to achieve but we are not determined to take actions upon them. If you introspect upon your new year resolutions made during past years, you will find this to be true.

You know a rosary of 108 beads has a pointer to denote which is the 1st, which is 2nd and which is 108th, otherwise it is just another bead and all beads are same. Similarly, a year containing 365 days has a pointer on 1st January to denote that it is the first day of a particular year, otherwise it is just another day and all the days are same.

Still, as 1st January has a symbolic pointer and has special significance in our lives, so, this year, in place of making new year resolutions, let us make EVERYDAY RESOLUTIONS. Let us find out today what needs to be done on EVERYDAY basis to make us achieve our goals in each walk of life. Let us find out what skills, what relationships, what actions need to be taken on DAILY basis so that we can come closer to our dreams during 2019.

In my ‘Excellence With G.O.P.T.A.© Series Part 8 [ http://www.icnnational.com/excellence-with-g-o-p-t-a-series-part-8/ ], we have seen that G.O.P.T.A. i.e. Goals Oriented Positive Thinking & Actions is essential for success. I had laid special emphasis on ‘Actions’ and my definition of ‘actions’ is that you have to work upon yourself,  i.e. you have to learn the goals-oriented skills; you have to inculcate goals-oriented habits; you have to build goals-oriented relationships; and you have to imbibe goals-oriented values. That is very important.

So, this new year, in place of setting any ‘To-Do’ type new year resolutions, let us make only 1 resolution that “I will work upon myself”. Working upon self is most beneficial of all the resolutions. It not only enhances your earning capacity & self-esteem, it also enhances your overall value to the society at large. Working upon self includes your determination to work upon your skills and values. This year, take resolve to work upon your skills in whatever field you are. Take resolve to work upon your values.

I am giving some food for thought which will be of use to you while working upon self.

  • Understand that comfort zone and internal resistance to change developed since childhood provide a strong gravitation pull, not allowing your ‘decision’ to become ‘determination’ to actually start doing something positive on regular basis and your so called ‘decision’ will remain a ‘wish’ only to be worked upon ‘someday’.
  • Understand value of time. You are grown up watching your parents and elders valuing the money so much, but at the same time, you have seen your parents & elders wasting lots of time in unnecessary activities. As nobody taught you the value of time, you inculcated a belief from your childhood that the time is free and unlimited, till you are alive.
  • Understand that if today you do, what is required to be done, whether you like it or not; the day will come, when you will have all the time and resources to do, whatever you want to do and whenever you like to do. But, if today you don’t do, what is necessary to do; you will be compelled to do, what life throws upon you.
  • Understand that by following the route and systematic process followed by earlier climbers, even Mount Everest can be peaked, age & sex don’t matter. There is no limit to human will, determination and resolve. You have to just believe it to do it.
  • Understand that your family is your first priority, as whatever you do, your family is always in the back of your mind. If you are doing your job or business, your basic desire is to earn money. Look deep inside yourself and you will find that you do this mainly for your family. If you want to build a good house, you want to enjoy living with your family. If you want to buy some luxurious item, you want to enjoy it with family. Family is always in your sub-conscious mind. If you cannot make this impression upon your sub-conscious mind, the goal setting and apparent success in other areas of life is meaningless; whatever big it may look.
  • Understand that money is by-product of good work.
  • Understand that the professional is larger than individual and if you strive to take your profession to new heights, your profession will take you to such heights, which are beyond imagination for you right now.
  • Understand that the Universal Father Almighty God, who has sent you on this earth, is always with you.
  • Understand that you can rewrite the script of your future, by reprogramming your sub-conscious mind by installing new positive beliefs and uninstalling the accumulated negative beliefs and flush out these viruses out of your sub-conscious mind.
  • Understand the importance of becoming a lifelong learner. Develop regular reading habits. If you start reading good books just for 15-20 minutes a day, you will easily finish at least 2 books every month, i.e.  24 books in a year i.e. 240 books over a period of 10 years. Imagine what will be the difference in mental standard of a person, who has read 240 books over a period of 10 years and a person, who has not read any books.
  • Understand that you are working on your dreams, not of anybody else. If you perform better, your future will be bright, not of others. Once you understand this, you will be committed to learn the skills, you need to be learnt; you will practice the behaviour, which is required to be practiced; you will understand the importance of preparation and practice; and you will focus upon the things, which will take you towards achieving success.
  • Understand that if you learn to discriminate, which tasks need to be done, when to be done and by whom to be done, you can move very fast towards your goals.
  • Understand that the lifestyle never changes in absence of proper motivation. Comfort zone and internal resistance to change developed since childhood provide a strong gravitation pull, not allowing your ‘decision’ to become ‘determination’ to actually start doing something positive on regular basis and your so called ‘decision’ will remain a ‘wish’ only, to be worked upon ‘someday’.
  • Understand that good health is your birthright, unless you deliberately choose to forego it for poor health or sickness.
  • Understand your role in your organization and develop the attitude & habit of going extra mile in pursuit of achieving your organizational goals and adding value to your organization, your individual goals are bound to be achieved in one way or another.
  • Understand that you actually get paid for the value, not for time.

A country is made out of the combined strength of its citizens. A society is made out of the combined strength of its people. Being a unit of the society, you have every right to be successful in life and shine like a bright swan.

Wishing you again, Happy G.O.P.T.A. Year.
