Nation Pays Tribute To ‘Iron Lady’ Indira Gandhi On Her 34th Death Anniversary

NEW DELHI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and former President of India Pranab Mukhejee Wednesday paid tribute to Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary at Shakti Sthal.

Indira, the 3rd Prime Minister of India, served as the second-longest PM of the country after her father Jawaharlal Nehru, she was assassinated on 31 October 1984  by her security guards.

Born on November 19, 1917, to India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru, she served as prime minister for three terms lasting almost 16 years.

Indira was appointed the chief of Congress party in 1959 and served as the prime minister of India from 1966 to 1977.

The ruling BJP on the same day paid tribute to India’s freedom icon Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to mark the first home minister’s 143rd birth anniversary.

Several tributes also poured in on micro-blogging site Twitter on Indira Gandhi Death Anniversary.”Tributes to our former Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary,” Modi said in a tweet.

“Remembering Dadi today with a deep sense of happiness. She taught me so much and gave me unending love. She gave so much of herself to her people. I am very proud of her,” Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Congress leader Ashok Gehlot wrote that Indira Gandhi contributed immensely towards national unity and integrity.Many former Union ministers, senior Congress leaders and Members of Parliament were also present.
