PM Modi, Sonia, Rahul Gandhi Pay Tribute To Iron lady On Her 101st Birth Anniversary

The Iron Lady of India, the former Prime Minister from 1966-77 and 1980-84 whose 101st birth anniversary is today.Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tweeted a photo of Indira Gandhi and captioned it “Forgiveness is a virtue.”

NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi, the first woman Prime Minister of India, was born on November 19 in 1917 in Allahabad.She was the second longest-serving Prime Minister after her father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

She held the Prime Ministers office from January 1966 to March 1977 and from January 14,1980 till her death in 1984.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi along with her son and Congress president Rahul Gandhi paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal, on her 101st birth anniversary on Monday.

PM Modi also tweeted his tribute for Gandhi. He wrote, ” Tributes to India’s former Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary.”

Former PM Manmohan Singh and former President Pranab Mukherjee visited Shakti Sthal today in Delhi and paid their tributes. Former Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari was also present to pay respect to Indira Gandhi.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards at her Safdarjung residence in New Delhi on October 31, 1984.Indira Gandhi’s compassion and concern for the people whom she governed manifested itself in diverse ways.

Indira Gandhi nationalized 14 major commercial banks with effect from the midnight of 13 July 1969, by issuing an ordinance, later ratified by the Parliament.

She was at her best in the midst of India’s ordinary women, men and children. Indira Gandhi was a charismatic and alluring leader during her times.
