Rafale Deal: Supreme Court Dismisses PILs, Denies Probe

The Supreme Court dismissed pleas seeking court-monitored probe into India’s Rafale fighter jet deal with France.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has given a much relief to the PM Modi government as the Chief Justice of India has said that ‘No occasion to doubt the process.’

The judgment was delivered by a Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and KM Joseph.

The Supreme Court however said that the Rafale deal process was perfectly fine and dismissed all PILs that demanded a court-monitored probe into the Rafale deal.

The Supreme Court also said it was not its job to examine the pricing of the Rafale jets.The opposition has been attacking the government saying that the government favoured a certain entity in the deal.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi says that the bench ‘can’t compel government to purchase 126 aircrafts and its not proper for the court to examine each aspect of this aircraft. “It isn’t a job of court to compare pricing details,” says CJI.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi oberves that ‘there is no reason for interference in the choice of offset partner and perception of individuals can’t be the basis for roving inquiry in sensitive issue of defence procurement’.

“Our country cannot afford to be underprepared,” the court also said today, referring to the Indian Air Force being short on the number of aircraft it must have.
