KOLKATA: You must be wondering, that in the last 7 articles, not even a single word has been uttered about G.O.P.T.A., while the title of our series is ‘Excellence with G.O.P.T.A.©’. The reason is that in previous articles, I was working on the mindset towards time utilisation patterns (part 1-4) and goals orientation in life (part 5-7), as I believe that without changing our attitude towards time utilisation patterns and goals-orientation, ‘tips’ are of no use. Today, I will talk about G.O.P.T.A. and in the further journey, we will see, how you can utilise G.O.P.T.A. in each walk of your life to add 3 productive hours daily to your life.
G.O.P.T.A.© is an acronym given by me to ‘Goals Oriented Positive Thinking & Actions’, first revealed in my book ‘How to Add 50000 Productive Hours to Your Life’. I am the copyright holder of G.O.P.T.A., which is gaining worldwide popularity. My vision is to find this acronym being taught in management schools and to find a place in the dictionary, so that our present & future generations can take benefit of this concept to improve the quality of their lives.
Since childhood, I was a keen observer of the happenings around me. I was always inquisitive about what is it that some people get more success than others while some people get just mediocre success. This led me to research more & more on essential ingredients of success. My tenure with Government of India, Ministry of Finance for more than 25 years provided me lots of opportunities to learn in different capacities. To mention a few, working in the capacities of Air Customs Officer at C.S.I. Airport, Mumbai; as Senior Intelligence Officer in the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence; and as a regular guest faculty at National Academy of Customs, Excise & Narcotics gave me wide exposure to meet people from different walks of life; and to study their aspirations and challenges in life. I observed that the biggest challenge in the lives of most of the people is lack of balance in different walks of life. I found that most of the people could not manage their time properly; they are not goals-oriented; they do not take actions towards their goals; their self-esteem is low; etc. etc. etc.
While studying success (whatever may be your definition of success, as we are not going into that detail right now), I found that different authors/ speakers have prescribed many ingredients for success like hard work, sincerity, honesty, integrity, punctuality, commitment, etc. I identified 3 ingredients, on which you can’t afford to be even 99%, if you want huuuuuge success in life. For the sake of convenience in remembering these 3 ingredients, I have created this acronym G.O.P.T.A. for Goals Oriented, Positive Thinking & Actions.
As you can see, GOPTA has following three limbs:-
- Goals-Oriented:- If you choose to be goals-oriented, you will first identify your goals and after that, your every thought, every action and every time utilisation pattern will be in the direction of achieving your goals. It will also improve your time management skills because you will learn to start asking a question to yourself as to ‘whatever I am doing right now is the most appropriate usage of my time or not’.
- Positive Thinking:- This is impregnating your sub-conscious mind with positive beliefs & positive attitude and inculcating positive values and habits to speed up the journey towards your goals. Positive thinking will help you inculcating strong beliefs and improve your self-image, which will drive you towards your goals and remove the brakes on your progress. Apart from these old definitions of positive thinking, I would like to add that if you possess positive thinking, you don’t allow others to pull down your mental, physical & emotional state (called MPE State in NLP). My mentor says that at any particular moment, you should be either up; or getting up.
- Actions:- Taking disciplined & persistent actions on daily basis in the direction of your goals, as without taking actions, even the best planning is of no use. And apart from this old definition of ‘actions’, i.e. to keep on working until you get success, I would love to add my definition of ‘actions’. And my definition of ‘actions’ is that you have to work upon yourself i.e. you have to learn the goals-oriented skills; you have to inculcate goals-oriented habits; you have to build goals-oriented relationships; and you have to imbibe goals-oriented values. That is very important.
I am suggesting you to think of at least 3 persons, whom you consider very successful. You will find that all of them are goals-oriented; possessed positive thinking; and they took timely & appropriate actions to achieve their goals. They did their best to build goals-oriented relationships, acquire goals-oriented skills, inculcate goals-oriented habits and pursued goals-oriented positive values.
This is the reason why I always say that GOPTA is essential for success. Negative thoughts manifest into negative circumstances and positive thoughts mystically create positive circumstances. If you want desired levels of success in life, you can’t afford to ignore any of the above three limbs of GOPTA.
If you use GOPTA in each walk of your life, you can add 3 productive hours daily to your life. That would translate to about 1000 productive hours a year and a youth of about 25 years will be able to add 50000 productive hours in his remaining life and will be able to construct his life with his own hands.
(In the upcoming articles of this series, we will know how to use G.O.P.T.A. in overcoming major obstacles on the way to achieving our goals. So, stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
