France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, join Uruguay and hosts Russia in the knockout rounds with one group game to go.

France beat Peru 1-0 with a goal from Kylian Mbappe on Thursday to book their place in the last 16 of the World Cup and crush the South Americans’ hopes of progressing in their first appearance at the tournament for 36 years.

Mbappe becomes France’s youngest scorer in the World Cup as his goal secured France’s position in the last-16.

The result leaves France on six points and Denmark and Australia on four and one respectively after their 1-1 draw earlier in the day.

Some Peru fans were in tears even before kick-off  a generation of Peruvians have never known their country in the World Cup before.

The South Americans’ last appearance was in 1982 and they made this like a home game, ensuring their red and white dominated the Yekaterinburg Arena.

Peru, meanwhile, have been eliminated, while Denmark and Australia remain in contention for a Last 16 spot.
