BJP-PDP Alliance Ends in Jammu and Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti submitted her resignation to Governor N N Vohra amid a swirl of political activity in Srinagar and New Delhi.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said the decision to withdraw was taken after consulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra forwards the report to President Ram Nath Kovind for the imposition of the Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir, says Raj Bhawan spokesperson.

“Jammu and Kashmir is not an enemy territory, we can’t have a muscular policy here. During Ramzan ceasefire peace returned to the valley,” says Mehbooba Mufti talking to reporters in Srinagar.

The BJP blamed the PDP for failing to improve the security conditions in the Kashmir Valley.Veteran Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bukhari’s death was cited as one of the reasons for the BJP pulling out of the alliance.

The BJP has maintained a hardline stance on the Kashmir issue and has stood for the repeal of Article 370 of India’s constitution which grants special autonomous status to the state.

The BJP won 25 seats and the PDP 28 in the 87-member assembly and came together in alliance, two months after the December 2014 elections. The NC has 15 seats, the Congress 12 and others seven.
