Delhi-NCR Smog: Schools Shut, Trains And Flights Delayed As Low Visibility

More than 20 flights were delayed or affected at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi after low visibility forced closure of a runway.

NEW DELHI: The smog is likely to hit railway and air traffic. Although, no delay in the timing of flights was reported by Airlines operating from Delhi International Airport.

The visibility came down to 50 metres in Delhi, leading to delay in trains. Reports say at least 12 trains from the national capital were running late due to decreased visibility. Flights from and to Delhi were also facing delays.

“The maximum temperature was recorded at 30 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, while the minimum settled at 16.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, in the national capital,” a MeT official said. The humidity levels oscillated between 92 and 41 percent.

“The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 31 and 16 degrees Celsius, respectively,” the official added.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that the city ‘has become a gas chamber’, not many outside the city could understand what it means.

Delhi’s Education Minister Manish Sisodia has announced that all primary schools will remain closed on Wednesday, 8 November. He also said that if needed, the order will be extended till 9 November.

The EPCA directed a fine of Rs 50,000 on road construction agencies violating dust pollution norms in the region.The EPCA has recommended that among other measures, the odd-even formula could be implemented again in Delhi.

The Indian Medical Association declared Delhi in a state of public health emergency, the organisation’s president Dr KK Aggarwal told ANI. “Schools should be shut and people must avoid stepping out,” Aggarwal said.
