KOLKATA: In part 11 of the series, we saw how to move from negatives to positives in each walk of life; and how a limiting belief can be flushed out of your thinking process by installing empowering positive belief in your thinking process. Today, we will see that how you can get rid of poor self-image by taking inspirations from some famous personalities for overcoming some limiting beliefs inculcated since childhood.)

Get rid of poor self-image

Getting rid of your poor self-image is absolutely necessary, without which you can’t proceed on the road to success, as poor self-image works like a brake on your success vehicle.

Before proceeding towards the simple methodology, let us first see some examples of negative inculcated beliefs and related positive inspiration from some successful personalities:-

Negative inculcated beliefs Positive inspiration from successful personalities
I am doing a small job. I can’t do anything for better.

Business Tycoon, Dhirubhai Ambani Ji served at a petrol pump in his early days. His vision led him to create one of the biggest business empires in the world.

Time and again, I fail in whatever I do.

Abraham Lincoln was defeated 15 times in different elections, before he became President of USA.

I belong to a very poor family.

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam belonged to a poor family. What education he pursued and what career of highest level of scientific knowledge he pursued is before us.

These days, there are so many success stories of students clearing Civil Services examinations and Judiciary examinations, whose parents were poor.

My circumstances did not allow me to take good studies.

Even Henry Ford, founder & owner of Ford Motors could not receive good education in his childhood.

I have some physical disability.

Sudha Chandran is a living legend. She lost her one leg but she continued dancing with the help of artificial leg and today she enjoys a successful career in dance & acting.

Helen Keller was an American author, political activist and lecturer. She was the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later on, she went on to become a prolific author. She campaigned for women’s suffrage, labour rights, socialism and other social causes. In India, the film ‘Black’ was inspired from her.

Once she was asked whether there is anything worse than being blind. She replied that worse than being blind is having eyes but having no vision

Now coming back to methodology of getting rid of poor self-image inculcated since early childhood, I would say that start telling yourself, ‘I love myself’. It is an antidote of ‘I hate myself’. Initially you will not find any reasons for loving yourself and you might think that it is actually untrue. No problem. Still continue repeating, ‘I love myself’. There is a huge psychological point behind this. As by now, you have kept on repeating, ‘I hate myself’, your sub-conscious mind has become habitual of finding the reasons of hating yourself. Once you start telling yourself, ‘I love myself’, though initially it may sound false, slowly your sub-conscious mind will be re-programmed to find out the reasons, as to why you should love yourself.

I would further suggest that don’t leave it to the sub-conscious mind only. You should also provide inputs with your conscious mind. If you consider yourself a failure, I would suggest you to look at your past and find out the good things, which make you feel that you have succeeded in the past. Believe me, you will fill pages. It will be a good starting point for starting positive re-programming of your sub-conscious mind. It will make you feel better and boost your confidence with the thinking that when I had succeeded in the past, I can also succeed in future also.

Think about your past. You will find there are hundreds of activities, which you find difficult to do in the beginning. Though, with the passage of time and with practice, you became perfect. Remember when you learnt paddling your bicycle, what was the level of fear in your heart that how you would balance the cycle on two wheels; or you will fall and get injured. Remember, how difficult it was for you to remember the table of 2, but later you were able to learn the difficult tables of even 17 and 19. You should always be aware that initially a new thing will appear difficult to do but with practice, you will become better and better.

Sometimes people think that nobody likes them or they try to be liked by everyone. Here I must tell you that nobody ever has been liked by all. Even Gautam Buddha, Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama were not liked by everyone. You should inculcate a new belief that ‘I am good and it doesn’t matter to me, if some people don’t like me’.

I strongly recommend that stop reading further and devote some time to ponder on this point, as this re-programming of your sub-conscious mind with positivity is the most important benefit of reading this article. But remember, don’t do it mentally. Please use a pen and paper. I guarantee you that once you start practising thinking on paper, you will never repent.

(In the upcoming article of this series, we will know how you can learn from others to even attempt to do seemingly impossible things. So, stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
