Thunderstorm: Severe Dust Storm Hits Delhi, 20 Indian States On Alert

The dust storms are common across semi-arid and arid regions of the world. When strong winds, also known as gust fronts, blow loose dirt and sand from the dry land surface, it results in a dust storm.

NEW DELHI: North India are likely to witness thunderstorm, accompanied by gusty winds and moderate squall on Tuesday. Winds speed is expected to vary between 50 and 70 km per hour, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD issued an alert on Monday saying “under the influence of a western disturbance, a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and a west-east tough from northwest Rajasthan to central Madhya Pradesh in lower levels” will bring light to moderate rainfall in north India.

Thunderstorm accompanied with squall or hail will very likely be seen over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram,Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Tripura, according to the IMD.

Heavy rains are very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka and Kerala. The IMD forecast for May 9 says heavy rain is very likely at isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya.The prediction comes a week after a deadly thunderstorm killed at least 124 people in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The Delhi government has decided to close all evening schools on Tuesday and put search and rescue teams on a standby in the wake of the IMD warning.There are around 400 evening schools running in the New Delhi.

The government has also asked other schools not to hold outdoor activities and extracurricular activities between 3 pm and 7 pm during which the wind speed is expected to remain high. The government also issued a list of “dos and don’ts”.

The Haryana government on Monday closed schools for two days as a preventive measure in view of the weather warning. In Uttarakhand, a holiday has been declared for schools up to class 12 in Haridwar and Dehradun districts.

All government and private schools up to class 12 will remain closed in both districts. All the Anganwadi centers will also remain closed.The traffic police has alerted their field formations to be ready to remove obstacles such as fallen trees and asked commuters to check weather conditions before travelling.

The Delhi Metro, too, has decided to exercise extreme caution in running of trains in the wake of the warning.
