(In the past article, we knew about the concept that how you can dream big fearlessly. Today, I will touch very important topic – Goals setting for students.)

Goal setting

Students have already learnt the process of goal setting in earlier articles of this series. Now you should set SMARTER goals in the following areas:-

Study & career

  • Visualise your future 25 years ahead from now.
  • In which field you visualise yourself?
  • Why you have chosen this particular career or profession?
  • Once you are able to decide your field of work, it would be easier for you to follow the necessary steps towards achieving your goals with the help of GOPTA.

If you are already doing your undergraduate course, you should decide specific choices for your future. I elaborate with an example here. My daughter has completed her 5 years integrated B.A., L.L.B. from NALSAR University of Law. This is such a reputed Law Institute of the country, where big national & international law firms & companies come for recruitment and the students get offers for good jobs in campus placement, after completing just 4 years of their course. They have a job in their hands and then study for remaining course in their 5th year. At times, the highest package extends to even mind boggling figure of Rs. 1 crore per annum.

When I was talking to my daughter in the first year of her course, we deliberated upon the options available after completion of course. We found that there were mainly 4 options: 1. to join any big law firm, which is a very lucrative and easy to get as campus placement; 2. to join any big company as a senior level officer in their legal department; 3. to become a private practitioner and create own law firm in due course; and 4. to join the judiciary and serve the cause of imparting justice. Though she had her initial inclinations towards joining judiciary, I advised her to keep all the options open before her. Still, her inclination towards joining judiciary guided her preparation in the remaining period.

The students who wanted to join any corporate house or law firms in campus placement concentrated upon their grades, CVs and internships at good law firms during the first three years of the course. The students who wanted to create their own law firms concentrated on studying one semester in any foreign University, so that they can use the tag of foreign return in due course. As she wanted to join judiciary, I took her to a senior practising lady advocate at High Court, who advised her that she should start concentrating upon understanding the interpretation of Sections of different statutes by vivisecting it into small phrases. She guided her how to vivisect the whole section into small phrases and understand it by the heart. She also advised her to start preparing for judicial examinations right from the 4th year of her course, so as to get 2 years to be fully prepared for entrance examination for judiciary.

You can see that all the students are doing the same course from the same university, but if your vision about your future is clear, you will spend your 5 years during the course in a much more purposeful manner and your studies during these 5 years will be goals oriented, filled with positive thinking and disciplined actions required for success. On the contrary, if your thinking is not goals-oriented, you will just spend 5 years in completing the course and then wait for campus placement, as usual.

The above example can show you, how you can use power of GOPTA during your studies to make your future bright, as you will come to know that designing your future is in your own hands.

(In the next article, I will touch the very important point i.e. Goal Setting for students in the areas of health, finance, family & relationships, social contribution and spiritual progress. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
