MEDICAL COURSES

The courses in Medicals are under the control and regulation of the Medical Council of India (MCI), which is a central regulatory authority. Most of the institutes were established by the central and state governments however many private medical institutes were started later to cater the medical aspirants.

Courses

The major courses for Medical atream are:

  1. M. B. B. S. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery) is 5.5 years’ course that includes one year of internship. The selection to this program is through Entrance Exams such as CPT, PMT conducted by states and some all India level exams such as AIIMS, AFMS, BHU Medical Entrance Exam and AIPMT (now replaced by NEET-UG).  After completing MBBS, one works as a physician.

  1. B. D. S. (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)

This program develops dental surgeons that look after the oral care which includes synthetically adjusting dentition and performing basic surgery of the teeth as well as jaw bones. This is a 5 years’ program which includes 1 year of internship.

  1. B. H. M. S. (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery)

This is a 5.5 years bachelor degree in Homeopathic Education in India under the regulation and supervision of the National Institute of Homeopathy.

  1. B. A. M. S. (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery)

B.A.M.S. is a 5.5 years’ program which also include internship that uses natural herbs as medicine also called Ayurvedic medicines to treat illness and is regulated by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM).

  1. M.D. (Doctor of Medicine)

This is a 3 years’ program and is awarded to the doctors who are physicians and are at least an MBBS.

  1. M.S. (Master of Surgery)

This 3 years degree course specialises in surgery and can be pursued only if a person in an MBBS.

  1. D.M (Doctorate in Medicine)

DM is a doctorate degree equivalent to the PhD degree and the requisite eligibility is an M.D degree.

  1. B.U.M.S (Unani Medicine)

It treats the diseases by the use of regimental treatment venasection, Turkish bath, rubdown, work out, use of herbal, mineral and animal drugs, and surgery. It is equivalent to the BAMS and Urdu is compulsory up to 10th class.
