KOLKATA: By now, I was working on the mindset by way of making you understand the importance of time management and goal setting; and power of using your sub-conscious mind towards achieving your goals. From today, we are starting the adventurous journey to real goal-setting process.

Zig Ziglar, renowned motivational speaker says, “A goal properly set is halfway reached.”

Before actually venturing into the goal setting process, you have to first evaluate, where you are in life and realise that goal programme is a must in each walk of life. You should understand that you have to focus on different aspects of your life simultaneously.

You might be wondering, why this evaluation is necessary.

The reason is here.

Your sub-conscious mind works like ‘GPS’.

I will explain with an example. All of you must have used GPS in your cars for finding directions to your destination. You provide at least one input to the GPS i.e. your desired destination. Then it automatically finds your current location as second input and gives you output in the form of various routes from your starting point to the desired destination. While following a route, if you don’t follow the given route, it warns you and if you don’t listen, it suggests another route after re-routing.

Your sub-conscious mind also works like GPS. You have to essentially provide the input of the desired destination i.e. your goals. Now your sub-conscious mind will require your current situation. This current situation is actually evaluation as to where you are in different walks of life. Once you provide these two inputs to your sub-conscious mind, it will suggest the routes to your destination. Following the suggested routes is your job. When some obstacles arrive or you change the route, it will suggest the detours, which you have to follow to reach your destination. This is the reason why you must evaluate where you are in different areas of your life, so as to provide your sub-conscious mind the starting point towards your goals.

What is ‘SUCCESS’?

During the course of my workshops, I ask a common question to people. What is the meaning of success for them? Almost always, it is seen that some people are successful in their careers but their personal life had suffered a lot. Some people hate their jobs or work. Some people even find themselves total failures in career as well as personal fulfilment. After initial discussions, it is always settled that it is the continuous progress and maintaining an optimal balance among different walks of life, which is required by all and that is the true meaning of success.

If you think that you are already successful, I congratulate you. Though, I want to tell you that the word ‘failure’ bears two different connotations. One relates to the normal meaning which we all understand in day to day life, i.e. ‘lack of success’. Another dimension of failure is ‘underperformance’ in comparison to your own true potential. If you think that you are successful, you need brainstorming, whether you have achieved success commensurate to your own true potential or not.

Even if you have performed well in life, don’t compare your success with others. They might not be that much capable, as you are. You have to measure your success in comparison to your own true potential.

(In the next article, we will discuss more about this aspect. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
