KOLKATA: In the last article, we understood the importance of setting goals in health and career & finance. Today, we will see the importance of goals setting in other areas of life also.

Personal fulfilment and enjoyment

What are your personal desires? Leisure time to play golf or chess; world tour with family or doing research in any topic; or learning any new skill, which pleases you, like playing guitar, gardening or anything else. Visualise yourself achieving your goals in this area of life.

Contribution to the parents, neighbourhood & the society

We all have some responsibilities towards our parents and our society. Think, what contribution you would like to make to the lives of your parents and what will be your contribution towards the society. What legacy you would like to leave. World famous author, Robin Sharma has written a whole book on this topic titled, ‘Who will cry when you die’. Read this wonderful book and you will find that you have taken much from your parents and society and you have to give it back. How much and in what form is to be decided by you.

Identify the gap between goals and current status

Have a list of different life aspects, such as, family, career & finance, health, friendship, recreation/ tourism, spiritual, contribution or any other area, close to your heart. Close your eyes for a minute, take a deep breath and identify, which area is most important to you and why. Then identify, how much time you are giving to your areas of focus in your current life style. Revisit your time log and tabulate the approximate hours given to these activities over last week. How these are compared with your ranking of what is most important to you.

Identify the gap between your aspirations and your focus. Now you can understand where your focus should be and where it is now. You are the outcome of your choices and if you continue to make choices as ever, you will continue to remain the same, as you are now. If you want to achieve happiness by striking balance in your priority areas of life, you have to simply focus upon the desired areas of your life, not the areas of your liking. It’s as simple as that. Now you should write your mission statement for the first 5 important life aspects as identified by you for yourself. This will show the big picture of your life, which has never been seen by you yourself.

Take responsibility of where you are because you are the outcome of your choices. You have to bear consequences of bad habits like excessively eating junk foods or fatty items, no exercise, unproductive works at office, excessive socialising or gossiping at office or at home etc., to name a few.

Most of the people wander here and there for their whole life pursuing nothing and there is no surprise that they get nothing.

(In the next article, we will further develop this theory for your benefit and I will share some crucial points. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
