Inculcate the positive attitude since childhood

Childhood is the most appropriate time to inculcate positive attitude. If the seeds of negative attitude are sown in the childhood, adulthood will see the tree of negativity. Whatever we learn in our childhood, remains in our sub-conscious mind forever. This is the reason, why the parents should consciously choose to help their children to develop correct attitude since childhood.

Parents are the best teachers for a child as the child is at home for most of the time. I elaborate this with an example. We all know that a child goes to school for about 200 days a year, for an average of 6-7 hours daily. This means that he spends about 1200-1400 hours a year with the teachers. As a year contains 8760 hours, a child spends more than 7000 hours a year at home. Therefore, parents are the best teachers for the child as the child learns by seeing his parents. He follows their language, their attitudes, their values, their habits and tries to imitate them either knowingly or unknowingly. That’s why it is always advisable to spend more & more quality time with your children.

All parents wish that their children do not inculcate bad habits. But just think, if you are the best teacher for your children, what learning you are giving to your children. Identify, which are your best habits, which you want to pass on to your children and which are your bad habits which you don’t want to pass on to your children. You can also identify the good habits, which you don’t posses, but you want your children should possess.

During childhood, we should encourage the child even at smallest available opportunities and be friendly with them. In our childhood, my parents used to tell the stories of Panchtantra etc. containing lots of messages of moral values. Parents should encourage the child to become a good communicator and be a good sports person. These skills are necessary for proper upbringing of the child. The values of gratitude towards Almighty God, compassion, humbleness, charitable attitude, caring and sharing are learnt by the child by seeing his parents. That is the reason, I would advise that parenting is a tedious job but you can make it enjoyable for both with little awareness and conscious efforts. The attitude developed in the childhood is carried by the sub-conscious mind of the child for whole life.

For example, you must have heard that in his school days, when Sachin Tendulkar was getting coaching from Ramakant Achrekar, he used to keep a coin on his stumps, which was given to the bowler taking his wicket, as reward. Thus, since childhood, Sachin learnt that his wicket carries a price and is valuable. This approach remained with him till his retirement and he always valued his wicket and he always knew the price of his wicket for his team.

When I enter into my car, switching on the ignition and fastening the seat belt is almost simultaneous. I never had to tell my daughter to use seat belt. It is impregnated in her sub-conscious mind. We are the role models for our children at their sub-conscious levels. Whatever we show them by example, they will inculcate the same habits and attitude as their personality.

(In the next article, we will know about the importance of becoming a person what you see in others. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
