By: Dr. Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Sr. Associate Editor, ICN Group

(In the past 3 articles, we knew about the importance of having correct ‘attitude’ so as to achieve your goals. Today, we will know the importance of inculcating the positive attitude since childhood. Happy parenting)

Become a person what you see in others

You have to explore what skills and attitudes you want to see in others and do your best efforts to develop those skills and attitudes in your behaviour. I take one example. Suppose you are the CEO of your organisation and you have to recruit some employees. What qualities you will look for in your employees? When I ask this question in my workshops, people start telling various qualities one by one. Following is a representative list, which I have gathered in my workshops and from some books:-

Honest

Loyal & trustworthy

Sincere

Having initiative

Takes responsibility

Highly motivated

Enthusiastic

Disciplined

Hard working

Punctual

Keeping organisational goals above individual goals

Competent

Creative

Friendly

Smiling and humorous

Willing to work more than paid for

Goal oriented

Sharing and caring

Having positive attitude towards life

Prompt

Good leader

Team player

Problem solver

Good communicator

..

..

and the list may run into pages.

Now observe how many of the above qualities relate to skills and how many of above qualities relate to attitude or behaviour.

Now it is time to introspect about yourself by asking some questions. If you want to see the above qualities in your employees, what type of employee are you? Do you possess the above qualities? If you want these qualities in your employees, why don’t you develop these qualities in you first, so that your boss may rely upon you? If you want to see these qualities in your ideal friends, why don’t you develop these qualities in you, so that somebody else may choose you as a friend? If you want to see the above qualities in your spouse and children, why don’t you develop these qualities in you first, so as to become a better spouse and parent?

If you are in a job and get posted at a new place where you have about 40-50 colleagues, what first quality you will look in the persons, which can attract you. I believe that the first quality will be a pleasing personality. Ask yourself, whether you are a pleasing personality yourself. If not, why others will get attracted towards you? There should be some starting point for interaction and I think the pleasing personality is the best for creating first impression good.

I would suggest that you visualise yourself having these qualities, even if you actually don’t have some of these. Write down all the qualities on a paper and affirm before going to sleep and after waking up that you are having these qualities in you. You can use positive affirmations by repeatedly saying that I possess the above qualities. Initially you will find that some of the qualities are not in you, still you should speak. Realisation is the first step. Once you realise that you don’t have this particular quality, your sub-conscious mind will start searching for the ways to develop the same. Do this and see the miracles in just 30 days. Your thinking will change and your life will take a u-turn towards success. You will sleep better and will awaken fresh; have more positive thoughts; better self-image; better pleasing personality; better productivity. Overall, you will be a much happier and enthusiastic person.

Positive affirmations are strongest antidotes of negative beliefs. Suppose, time and again you repeat to yourself that you are capable of doing certain thing, how long the negative thought that ‘you can’t do it’ can remain in your mind. Gradually, the negative thought has to evacuate your sub-conscious mind to make room for the positive affirmations and empowering & resourceful beliefs and it will start becoming real for you.

(In the next article, we will know about the importance of becoming a progressive person. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
