Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Started Erupting Again, Trump Approves Disaster Aid

Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanos and one of five on the island. The Kilauea Volcano has been erupting nearly continuously since early May.

LOS ANGELES: The continuous eruption of Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano created a tiny new island off the coast, which shortly disappeared, officials said Monday.

Kilauea has been active since 1983, with 61 USGS-recorded eruptions. It’s one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and for the past few months it’s been in a period of heightened activity.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the island about 20 to 30 feet in diameter was formed by lava and appeared just a few meters off shore from the northern edge of the Big Island. A lava bomb from the volcano struck an ocean tour boat on Monday, injuring 23 people.

President Donald Trump approved federal emergency housing aid and other relief last week for victims of the Kilauea Volcano eruption on Hawaii’s big island.

Trump also approved relief from other FEMA programs, including legal aid, crisis counseling, and unemployment benefits.

Scientists believe that volcanic activity can be a precursor to a major eruption, similar to a Kilauea eruption in the mid-1920s.

The continuous eruption of the volcano produced lava, which was pushed by underwater pressure to flow to the surface, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Residents in affected areas have had to stay at the two shelters open to lava evacuees or find other places to stay. Many of the residents have also been grappling with loss of income, as their businesses and farms have been disrupted by the eruption.
