India Extends $ 200 Million Lines Of Credit To Rwanda

The IMF stated that Rwanda is the third fastest growing economy in Africa, although human rights groups report restricted freedom of speech in the country.

Rwanda, a small landlocked country in east-central Africa. The country has struggled with its legacy of ethnic tension associated with the traditionally unequal relationship between the Tutsi minority and the majority Hutus.

Today, Rwanda is striving to rebuild its economy, with coffee and tea production among its main exports. The World Bank has praised Rwanda’s recent “remarkable development successes”, which it says have helped reduce poverty and inequality.

PM Modi is on a two-day visit to Rwanda one of Africa’s fastest growing economies. He is the first Indian prime minister to visit the country.

President Kagame in his remarks said that Prime Minister Mr. Modi’s visit represents a milestone between the long standing friendship and cooperation between Rwanda and India.The President of Rwanda is the current Chair of the African Union.

China is by far Rwanda’s largest trading partner and contractor with 70% of roads in the country built by Chinese companies.

India also extended two lines of credit one of $100 million for development of industrial parks and Kigali special economic zone (SEZ) in Rwanda and another one for $100 million for agriculture.

From a culture where a cattle are very important animals, like in Rwanda, Modi will deliver 200 cattle to households in Rweru  model village in Bugesera district, eastern Rwanda.

PM Modi will visit the Genocide Memorial and participate in an event on “Girinka” (one cow per family), a national social protection scheme of Rwanda initiated by Mr. Kagame.

The two countries signed agreements on leather and allied areas and agricultural research.Modi would proceed to Uganda today for a two-day visit, the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister since 1997.
