Congress National President Rahul Gandhi Leads Protest March To CBI Headquarters

Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders of other opposition parties staged a protest outside all CBI offices across the country, demanding CBI chief Alok Verma’s instatement.

NEW DELHI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi, joined by senior leaders of other opposition parties, on Friday turned up outside the CBI headquarters in Delhi.

Gandhi, along with hundreds of party workers, was protesting outside CBI headquarters against the overnight ouster of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Alok Verma.

The Centre divested agency director Verma of his powers and sent him on leave.  CBI is India’ anti-corruption agency, which also investigates special crimes and high-profile cases.

Gandhi led the protest against the government move to strip Verma of his power, which he said was an attempt to prevent an investigation into the Rafale deal.

Leaders from the Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, CPI(M) and other parties marched from Dyal Singh College in central Delhi’s Lodhi Road to the CBI headquarters. Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav, CPI’s D Raja and TMC’s Nadimul Haque joined the Congress protest.

Congress leaders also protested outside all Central Bureau of Investigation offices across the country. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar led the protest march in Lucknow.

The Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and CPI Friday held a demonstration infront of the CBI office in Hyderabad against the move to divest the central agency’s Director Alok Verma of his power and send him on leave.

The Supreme Court on Friday heard the petition filed by CBI director Alok Kumar Verma challenging the decision of the Centre to divest him of his duties and sending him on leave.

The top court has directed that the probe against CBI chief Alok Verma be completed in 2 weeks. The probe would be conducted under the supervision of a retired judge of the Supreme Court.
