Supreme Court Orders CVC To Complete Probe Against Alok Verma In 2 Weeks, Interim Director Can’t Take Major Decisions

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi posted the next date of hearing on November 12.Verma and Asthana have made allegations of corruption against each other.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court ordered the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to complete its enquiry against CBI director Alok Verma in two weeks under court monitoring and asked interim director M Nageswara Rao to refrain from taking any policy decisions.

Nageswara Rao will only take routine administrative decisions. A three judge bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi also issued formal notices asking the government, the CBI and the CVC to place their stands before the top court.

Former SC judge A K Patnaik will oversee the CVC enquiry against Verma.All decisions taken by Rao shall be placed before the apex court in a sealed cover.

The bench, also comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, issued notices on the petition filed by an NGO.During the brief hearing Friday, senior advocate F S Nariman advanced arguments on behalf of the CBI chief.

CBI director was appointed with the approval of a selection panel having the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley dubbed the apex court order for a time-bound CVC probe as a “extremely positive development”, adding that it was in the best interest of the country that the truth comes out.

The CBI director Alok Verma had earlier filed an FIR against his deputy Rakesh Asthana in the matter dealing with alleged bribery scandal of Moin Qureshi case. The Supreme Court will now hear the case on November 12.
